Broadcom Corporation has launched what it touts is the industry's first GNSS SoC that gears up wearable fitness devices with precision activity tracking and location data.

The BCM4771 GNSS SoC is equipped with an integrated sensor hub, combined with its location capabilities, reducing board are and power consumption at 75 per cent less than existing GNSS devices. It constantly monitors user activity levels and location history to improve accuracy while adding advanced features such as location batching. The SoC supports the company's Wireless Internet Connectivity for Embedded Devices (WICED) Smart and WICED Direct SDKs to provide additional wireless connectivity to the platform.

Designed in 40nm process technology, the on-chip sensor hub integrates sensor inputs for its on-chip algorithms to detect the user's context, accurately compute speed and distance travelled, and provide fitness applications with the GNSS track. The sensor hub is also responsible for lowering the overall bill of materials cost.

As Broadcom adds a new level of activity and location tracking to the growing fitness and wearable device market, the wearable wireless device revenues are projected to exceed $6 billion in 2018 with sports, fitness and wellness as the largest segment with 50 per cent share of all device shipments, according to ABI Research.
