How they generate Certimo ratings
For generating Certimo ratings, "We have instrumentations to run lab tests for three main categories that include performance tests, battery life tests, and display quality measurements," explained Brusco. BDTI spends at least three days testing each device.

Based on regional consumer usage data gathered by various sources (assuming that Chinese consumers, for example, show a set of different behaviours in their mobile device usage), they created a regionally applicable weighting system for ratings.

All ratings are certified by BDTI.

The eight Certimo Ratings are generated by weighing and averaging the raw data extracted from the tests.

Each of the four user experience ratings (browsing, infotainment, messaging, and multimedia) are generated by grouping, weighting, and averaging the raw data of a set of tests that directly reflect on the relevant user experience.

The four user experience ratings use results from all three main categories of performance tests, battery life tests, and display quality measurements.

The three main category ratings (performance, battery life, and display quality), however, are rated independently. For example, the performance rating consists of a weighted average of all the performance-related test results but contains neither battery life nor display quality results.

In essence, the Certimo ratings offer "objective" test results based on user experience, Brusco said. "But they are not meant to replace more subjective reviews by media or consumers," he added.

Mobile Experience Alliance
The Mobile Experience Alliance is looking to expand its membership. Brusco is in Barcelona this week at the World Mobile Congress, pitching the Alliance's tiered membership model. Members interested in joining are expected to be broad-based, said Brusco. They range from handset OEMs, ODMs, audio, video, GPU, SoC vendors, and component suppliers to retailers, operators, and media.

The Mobile Experience Alliance is initially focused on China and on its work rating Android smartphones. It hopes to expand its geographical markets and add different types of devices including tablets, iOS devices and even Firefox OS-based devices, for example. As to the alliance's future work, "It's ultimately BDTI's decision, but we expect the member companies to drive the roadmap," said Brusco.
