Huawei conducted a seminar at the Mobile World Congress, detailing an open cloud-based communications network and its applications for increasing resource sharing and efficiency.

Telefnica subsequently formed a strategic cooperation with Huawei, seeing how the latter's technology could provide a foundation for Telefnica's network transformation. A memorandum of agreement was signed to push the UNICA infrastructure architecture, software-defined networking (SDN), and network functions virtualisation (NFV).

In the seminar, Huawei highlighted its cloud computing strategy core, FusionSphere, saying that the technology can facilitate the smooth migration of IT and telecom services to the cloud. It implements high-performance distributed storage, SDN, and large-scale dynamic resource scheduling, reducing operating expenses.

FusionSphere's integration with OpenStack is an advantage seen to aid telecom networks in providing real-time, secure service assurance, and ensuring efficient operations. OpenStack Foundation executive director Jonathan Bryce said that the platform can help carriers minimise the total cost of ownership and meet requirements for scale.

FusionSphere has been deployed in over 40 countries.

"Just like IP technologies did before, cloud computing is changing the landscape of telecom," said Huawei Rotating CEO Xu Zhijun. "We can see that the future network infrastructure will be data centre-centric, software defined, virtualised, open cloud-based and ICT-converged. Cloud OS will play a key role in this network transformation."
