MediaTek has designed a combined SoC and DC wall charger technology that is said to cut a smartphone's or tablet's battery recharge times by half, compared to a standard USB charger.

The Pump Express allows communication between a mobile device and the DC wall charger to determine the initial voltage required to recharge the battery. The voltage is then gradually increased up to 5V to maximise the charging current, while keeping the battery within its thermal limits.

The technology comes in two forms, accommodating different battery capacities. The Pump Express is designed for DC wall chargers with an output of less than 10W, whereas Pump ExpressPlus is for chargers with an output of 15W or more.

The company expects its technology to be available in commercial devices by the first half of 2014.
