Broadcom has designed an SDN interface, the OpenFlow Data Plane Abstraction (OF-DPA) v1.0, which includes a series of switch pipeline and APIs for modifying and querying flow table and group table entries. Billed as the industry's first, the platform openly publishes the implementation of Open Networking Foundation's (ONF) OpenFlow 1.3.1 switch.

The OF-DPA platform includes a specification, software and API, application development kit, and programmer's guide under the Apache 2.0 release. The software and API feature OpenFlow 1.3.1 support over Broadcom's switch SDK.

The platform also includes a so-called turnkey package with an open source reference agent on ODM platforms and hardware systems based on Broadcom-contributed OCP Open Switch Specification. The turnkey package is integrated with the open source RYU OpenFlow 1.3.1 Controller.

As an SDN implementation method, OpenFlow standardises the delivery of a centralised, programmable network that can dynamically address changing specification requirements. The OF-DPA enables application in popular use cases such as network virtualisation, multi-tenant networks and traffic engineering with higher scale and performance.

While a beta version is being distributed on Github, the company expects to release the generally available version in March.
