RDA Microelectronics Inc. has announced volume production of its RDA5991 WiFi combo chip integrating Bluetooth and FM with 802.11b/g/n wireless technologies. According to the company, the RDA5991 is optimized for mobile applications such as wireless handsets and tablets.

The chip's WLAN, Bluetooth and FM capabilities can work simultaneously or independently with RDA's proprietary WiFi/Bluetooth Coexistence technology. It is designed especially for low power consumption to improve battery life. The 802.11b/g/n MAC is integrated with a PHY, 2.4Ghz transceiver, power amplifier, antenna switch and LNA into a single-die SoC using an advanced flip-chip 4 x 4mm BGA package, resulting in minimal board space.

"The RDA5991 offers better performance at a smaller size and lower cost compared to competing products in its category," stated Shuran Wei, CEO of RDA. "RDA's product offerings now include a complete wireless solution across the most popular networking standards, including 802.11n. In addition, the 5991 represents another step in our efforts to expand into the large and rapidly growing low-cost tablet market in China. The Asia Pacific region is estimated to account for up to half of the global tablet shipments by 2015, and we are well positioned with this and other products to capture expanded share in this market."
