An extended collaborative effort between STMicroelectronics and SoftAtHome is expected to deliver ultra high definition (UHD) viewing experience on ST chip enabled set top boxes (STB).

The STBs are powered by STiH312 Cannes Ultra and integrated with the ScreenAtHome software platform. This will facilitate UHD content streaming over broadband and other high-speed connections, beyond traditional pay TV services.

The chip is implemented in 28nm technology featuring a dual core ARM-based processor and a quad core GPU for true 3D graphics, with a decoding capacity up to 2130p30. ScreenAtHome is built with SOP and so incorporates an advanced in house DLNA stack. ScreenAtHome, meanwhile, offers a universal player that simplifies content distribution and saves bandwidth.

Both companies consider this collaboration a boon for this year, with UHD content taking off alongside some major international sporting events including the Winter Olympic Games and the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
