CEO of China's SMIC talks about global expansion

Keywords:SMIC? wafer fab? MEMS? 28nm?

The SMIC CEO said that SMIC must make sure it meets the needs of the Chinese market and Chinese products. For that matter, in responding to Chinese customers' strong demand for 8in displays, SMIC is now bringing up an 8in fab in Shenzhen. "We have procured the second-hand equipment, and we're installing them right now," Chiu said. The plan is to build a capacity of 50,000 wafers per month. "Our speciality technology products will be made at the 8in fab. They include PMIC and image sensors."

Clearly, SMIC's focus today is what China needs right now. But what about high-end advanced technology? Should I even ask about SMIC's plan for 14nm process?

Chiu said, "We will be ready with FinFET at 14nm process by the end of 2016." He said it as a matter of fact. Somehow, he never made it sound like a big deal.
