Solar Frontier notches up 20.9% conversion efficiency

Solar Frontier has taken another step forward in the development of thin-film of PV technologies, notching up 20.9 per cent conversion efficiency on a 0.5cm2 CIS cell. The result has been verified by Fraunhofer Institute.

Working jointly with New Energy & Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), Solar Frontier's achievement surpasses its previous beststhe 19.7 per cent conversion efficiency for CIS cells that do not contain cadmium, and the 20.8 per cent set for all-thin film PV technologies.

This resulted from a CIS cell cut from a 30cmx30cm substrate produced using a sputtering-selenisation formation method, accoding to Solar Frontier CTO Satoru Kuriyagawa.

Whereas conversion efficiency is a popular measurement used to compare the performance of solar modules, actual performance after installation depends on how differing PV technologies react to their surrounding environment and climate. The company's CIS modules are proven to generate more electricity in real operating conditions than crystalline silicon modules.
