EpiCrystals Inc. has engineered a multi-colour laser light source that provides an enhanced projection quality in applications including smartglasses, near-to-eye or head-mounted displays, and other augmented reality wearable devices.

The light source is based on a proprietary DeCIBEL laser platform that boasts the brightest true colours and infinite contrast ratio. The platform has a two-component design operating through frequency conversion to provide visible light output in a small form factor, allowing operation at 2V.

The core of the DeCIBEL laser is a GaAs-based infrared semiconductor laser diode (LD), which emits narrow pulses in a passive way. These pulses are then converted to visible R/G/B when guided through a PPLN non-linear crystal. Using a single integrated lens in the LD, the coupling can be done very fast giving rise to low manufacturing costs and high yield. The spectrum width of the laser is widened so that speckle contrast is minimised.

EpiCrystals Inc. VP of Business Development Tomi Jouhti highlighted several advantages that the laser light source brings: "Unlike conventional light sources our laser does not emit any visible spontaneous emission which limits the achievable contrast and quality; when our laser is turned on, only stimulated laser emission is in use, giving rise to infinite contrast; finally, black is black, and the grey box in the background seen in projected images today is now gone."

EpiCrystals has started shipping pre-production samples to partners and customers.
