Configurable sensor boosts speed, optical performance

On Semiconductor has debuted a series of CMOS image sensors that integrate a global shutter technology for industrial image sensing applications including machine vision, inspection and motion monitoring, as well as security and surveillance applications including intelligent transportation systems.

The Python series includes sensors with resolutions of 300kpx, 500kpx and 1.3Mpx. It features the company's in-pixel correlated double sampling, which results in a claimed charged-couple device- like performance.

The series combines a read noise of less than 9 e-, with 7.7V/lux sensitivity, and frame rates as high as 850fps in VGA format. A configurable sequencer also allows on-the-fly updates to the sensor configuration. The sensors operate across the -40C to 85C industrial temperature range.

Resolutions of VGA, SVGA and SXGA are offered by the first three sensors with higher resolutions planned for release. All are pin-to-pin compatible with one-another and with the existing VITA1300 image sensor.

"Python offers an image sensing solution that not only provides appealing levels of speed without compromising image quality, but is also configurable and flexible enough to provide simple integration across multiple resolutions," On Semi Image Sensor Business Unit Director Thad Smith said.
