20bit SAR ADC delivers 1.6MS/s throughput at 9mW

Maxim Integrated Products, Inc. has developed a 20bit, 1.6MS/s successive approximation register (SAR) analogue-to-digital converter (ADC) that is equipped with internal reference buffers to enable savings of as much as 91 per cent in power and 50 per cent in space.

The MAX11905 operates at 9mW, and achieves 98.3dB signal-to-noise ratio and -123dB THD. It has a unipolar differential VREF input range, with supplies including 3.3V for the reference buffers, 1.8V analogue supply, a 1.8V digital supply, and a 1.5V to 3.6V digital interface supply.

The MAX11905 delivers high 20bit resolution with no missing codes at 1.6Msps of speed, while consuming only 9mW of powerenabling flexibility in designs without compromises.

"In the past, engineers used 24bit delta-sigma ADCs to achieve fast acquisition with low noise and distortion," said Carmelo Morello, Senior Business Manager at Maxim Integrated. "With the MAX11905 SAR ADC, you can reach ultra-low-noise, ultra-low THD with low offset and gain drift, but now at less than 1/10 the power consumption and no settling time limitations."

The device communicates data using a SPI-compatible serial interface. It comes in a 20-pin, 4mmx4mm TQFN package, and is specified over the -40C to 85C operating temperature range.

The ADC is in production and available at $33.95.
