Innovation is shaping up well in Vietnam, following the successful development of a pressure sensor chip using MEMS technology.

Lauded as the country's first, the chip is the result of two years' collaborative work between the Saigon Hi-tech Park's Research and Development (R&D) Centre and Vietnam National University's Integrated Circuits Design Research & Education Centre (ICDREC).

The chip can be customised to meet different measurement ranges and form factor requirements. It boasts stability with a consistence rate of more than 95 per cent. According to local publications, the chip will integrate ICDREC's SG V8-01 microprocessor for its implementation in electronic measurement equipment.

R&D Centre's Truong Huu Ly led the pressure sensor chip design project. He told VNS that they have signed a deal with Ho Chi Minh-based Global Technical Service for the chip's production and deployment in storage and water measurement applications.

In the same VNS report, ICDREC Director Ngo Duc Hoang said that about $9.5 billion has been spent on research involving high-tech products, a lot of which have been commercially launched. This particular investment aligns with the government's push to strengthen research and practice in the science and technology sectors.

Earlier, the country's Law on Science and Technology has been revised to adopt a funding model followed by developed countries where majority of the investment comes from the businesses and the state only grants up to 35 per cent.

The success of the pressure sensor chip indeed suggests an industry being led in innovation. Along with the reforms and increased government support, Vietnam is not far from seeing its expected success ratio in implementing scientific projects jump by five points to 15 per cent.
