Photocoupler integrates embedded protection features

Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC) has revealed a smart gate driver photocoupler for medium-power IGBTs and power MOSFETs.

The TLP5214 protects circuits between electronic devices or blocks noise by electrically isolating the input and output blocks. It is integrated with the company's high-reliability infrared LED, making it suited for a range of applications including those that require high thermo-stability such as factory automation, home photovoltaic power systems, digital home appliances and UPS.

Housed in a SO16L package, the device protects circuits by electrically isolating the input and output block.

A maximum propagation delay time of 150ns and a propagation delay skew of 80ns are provided within the defined operating temperature range of up to 110C to reduce dead time in the inverter circuit for improved operating efficiency.

The device integrates many functions including IGBT desaturation detection, active miller clamp, and FAULT detection to prevent the IGBT from reaching over-current conditions. It can detect and handle malfunctions in a single chip.

The photocoupler measures 2.3mm. It is housed in a thin SO16L package, which provides a creepage distance of 8mm, suitable for applications that require higher isolation specifications. It is scheduled for mass production by the end of May.
