Multi-core ASIC advances natural user technologies

Israeli start-up Intuitive Ltd. has launched its image and computer vision processor, the NU3000 ASIC. It is claimed to deliver unrivalled performance and accuracy for 3D imaging, natural user interface, and 3D vision applications in consumer devices including smartphones, tablets, and other consumer devices.
The ASIC leverages a multi-core architecture, which comprises the following: two CEVA MM3101 image signal processors, an ARM Cortex A5 with neon vector processor, and the company's proprietary computer vision hardware accelerators.
The ASIC functions as a co-processor, and features an open software architecture to support both proprietary and third party software. Engineers can embed their own technology as well as integrate additional application layers that to be executed on the co-processor and isolated from the main processor's timing constraints. This frees up the main CPU for performing other tasks, and lowers power consumption and latency of the overall system.
In addition, Inuitive has also developed several 3D camera modules based on its proprietary "3D assisted stereoscopy." This technology claims an accuracy capable of supporting most NUI technologies including gesture recognition, fine-finger tracking, face detection and recognition, head orientation and eyes gaze tracking. It performs in extreme lighting conditions, from dim indoor lights to intense outdoor daylight.
