Image recognition MPU fits into ultra-small modules

Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. has launched an image recognition processor, under the Visconti series, for miniaturised camera modules. The TMPV7502XBG features a one-channel video input interface, a compact 11mmx11mm package, and power consumption as low as 0.6W.

The device is designed for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), which identify and recognise oncoming and surrounding vehicles and pedestrians from the in-vehicle cameras. It can perform multiple detections simultaneously, such as a lane departure warning, collision warning, pedestrian detection and traffic sign recognition.

The Visconti Series incorporates Toshiba's original image processing accelerators using Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) features, enabling real-time pedestrian detection both in night time and daytime. HOG enables detection of humans regardless of lighting changes or small deformations.

Samples of the TMPV7502XBG are currently shipping, with mass production scheduled in November 2014. Reference pricing begins at $35.
