E Ink Holdings has revealed what it claims is the largest single-display ePaper module enabling a 32-inch display, a 25-fold increase in the size of that in an eReader. It is designed for applications in the digital signage and information kiosk markets.

The module has a resolution of 2560X1440, measuring 27.75 inches by 15.75 inches at 94DPI. It boasts the same ultra-low power properties as all E Ink displays, as well as being lightweight and readable in all light conditions.

The module was designed in cooperation with Global Display Solutions who developed the enclosure technology, which facilitates deployment in outdoor conditions with very low power consumption.

"Using E Ink technology, we were able to design an outdoor display that is only a few millimetres in thickness with very low power consumption and without fan noise. We believe this product can replace existing LCD and LED displays for many applications in the digital signage market as well as open up new markets that are looking for green display technology," said Andrea Ongaro CTO for GDS.

E Ink's technology is commonly referred to as "bistable," which allows retention of the image on an E Ink screen even when all power sources are removed. In practice, this means that the display is consuming power only when something is changing. For example, when reading on an eReader, power is only needed when turning to a new page but no power is consumed by the display while reading the page. Bistability significantly reduces the power consumption of displays using E Ink and is a key reason eReaders have such long battery life.

Examples of the 32-inch black and white, and colour displays are exhibited at the E Ink booth at Computex in Taipei.
