Realtek commences R&D operations in Singapore

Realtek Semiconductor Corp. has launched its regional operations in Singapore, providing R&D support for the development of advanced network processors and smart solutions for home and wearable devices, according to The Business Times.

The R&D centre signals along the Taiwan-based IC designer's commitment to reportedly invest $180 million and employ 75 skilled professionals over the next five years.

The planned development of network processors and smart solutions illustrates a concentrated effort to leverage the thriving IoT and communications infrastructure markets.

Realtek's products are built around its core strengths, which the company identifies as follows: analogue and mixed signal design, circuit design and process expertise, and system knowledge and IP.

The fabless semiconductor company was established in 1987 and is said to be sixth largest company in Asia and 16th largest in the world, operating with a capital of $168 million. It holds over 2,000 patents worldwide, and employs about 2,000 people, majority of which works in R&D.
