Royal Philips intends to streamline operations by combining its Lumileds and Automotive Lighting companies into a stand-alone business within the Philips Group. The Dutch consumer electronics giant is looking to spur innovation through this venture as the LED lighting market continues to flourish.

The merged LED components and automotive lighting units will have more flexibility to attract investors to fund further growth, according to Philips CEO Frans van Houten. Combined sales of the two companies were $1.92 billion in 2013. Philips Lighting CEO Eric Rondolat added, "By combining Philips Automotive lighting and Lumileds, the Automotive lighting customers will benefit from a fully integrated end-to-end R&D and supply chain, enabling the adoption of LED technology in automotive applications." Lumileds CEO Pierre-Yves Lesaicherre will lead the integrated business once merger is completed in the first half of 2015.

Philips first introduced LED headlights in 2009 and then led an R&D consortium that devised a 3D OLED rear lighting concept for Audi last year. Together with BASF, Philips is now targeting the possible application of transparent OLEDs for cars' sun roofs.
