DecaWave module enables precise indoor location, comms

DecaWave has brought to market its first module based on what it says is the industry's most precise indoor location and communication CMOS chip, the DW1000. The DWM1000 module will allow a broader audience access to DecaWave's DW1000 and technology, which makes indoor location and communications more accurate, cost-effective and power-efficient than ever before, stated the company.

Customers can now simply and quickly integrate the technology as a plug and play solution, reducing the cost of development and the risks associated with radio frequency (RF) design. The DWM1000 integrates everything necessary for RF design. The DW1000 chip, antenna, balun, crystal and passive components are all fitted on a 23 x 13 x 2.9mm 24-pin side-castellation package.

This level of integration has been made possible thanks to the close collaboration between DecaWave and LG Innotek, a company focused in module and sub-system manufacturing. This makes the use of the DWM1000 possible even in the most size-constrained applications such as portable equipment.

The DWM1000 is an IEEE802.15.4-2011 UWB compliant wireless transceiver module. Based on DecaWave's DW1000 IC, it allows the location of objects in real time location systems (RTLS) to a precision of 10cm. It is capable of high data rate communications, up to 6.8Mb/s, and it is also a perfect fit in wireless sensor network (WSN) applications, the company added. Based on an excellent communications range of up to 290m in Line of Sight and up to 35m in Non-Line of Sight, it also reduces the system cost and the need for additional infrastructure.

The DWM1000 is available at Digikey or from $30 for smaller quantities or $15 for quantities of 5,000 to 10,000 parts.
