Tiny 3MHz DC/DC converters take on wearables

Texas Instruments (TI) announced the industry's smallest and lowest power modules for next-generation ultra-low power applicationswhich include wearable electronics, remote sensors, and MSP430 FRAM microcontroller-based designsexpanding the company's ability to offer the highest performance DC/DC converters.

Low power and small size matter when it comes to wearable designs. TI's new TPS82740A and TPS82740B step-down converter modules support 200mA output current with 95 per cent efficiency and consumes only 360nA of quiescent current during active operation and 70nA during standby. The tiny 3MHz modules rely on a fully integrated, 9bump MicroSiP package, which incorporates a switching regulator, inductor, and input/output capacitors to achieve a solution size of only 6.7mm2 and a power density of 30mA/mm2. Used in conjunction with TI's WEBENCH online design tools, the TPS82740x simplifies power conversion and speeds the design process.

The TPS82740A supports output voltages from 1.8V to 2.5V, while the TPS82740B supports 2.6V to 3.3V in 100mV steps, which can meet power requirements of microcontrollers, such as TI's MSP430FR59xx MCUs, and Bluetooth low energy solutions, such as the SimpleLink CC2541 wireless MCU.


The TPS82740x MicroSiP modules expand TI's portfolio of ultra-low power integrated circuits that help maintain longer battery life and even enable battery-free operation in low-power designs. The bq25570, bq25505, TPS62740, TPS62737, and TPS62736 battery management and DC/DC converters achieve the industry's lowest levels of active quiescent current.

The TPS82740A and TPS82740B are shipping in volume production, and are available through TI's worldwide distributor network. Both modules come in a 2.3mm by 2.9mm by 1.1mm MicroSiP package, and are priced at $1.55 each in 1,000unit quantities. Designers can order the TPS82740AEVM-617 evaluation module and download the PSpice transient module simulation software to simplify design and reduce development time.
