Oculus Rift's Developer's Kit 2 (DK2) chalked up a near-perfect score for how easy it can be repaired by an average person. The fix-it-yourself web site that also sells tools for fixing electronics, iFixit, found it relatively simple to get into and poke around the DK2. The device got a nine on iFixit's "repairability" scale, with the caveat that this was the beta version of the kit.

For the most part, DK2 exhibits key electronic achievements. The device is an implementation of techniques for lightening weight while improving cost and function.

Facebook wagers its future on experience-sharing
Facebook has taken the industry by surprise with its recent acquisition of Oculus, a start-up that has yet to launch a consumer product, for $2 billion in cash and Facebook stocks.

The guts of Oculus Rift, according to iFixit, include:

  • Accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer with an update rate of 1000Hz
  • Positional tracking via external camera with near-infrared CMOS sensor. The tracking unit in DK2 is new and custom-made. (Not your old web-cam, in other words.)
  • Low-persistence 5.7" Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 960x1080 per eye; The display is the front panel of a Samsung Galaxy Note 3, which iFixit said is a great way to save some money.
  • Built-In latency tester
  • 100 field of view (iFixit said this is a much discussed change from DK1)

    • Thanks to the Spectra7 VR7100 iFixit found tucked into the cable, DK2 has thinner cables.
