Toshiba Corp. has introduced a 20MP back-side illuminated (BSI) CMOS image sensor that enables z-height camera modules of just 6mm. According to the company, the T4KA7 is intended for camera modules in smartphones and tablets.

Smartphones and tablets require smaller cameras with higher resolution and the 1.12um pixel size of the T4KA7 contributes to this, stated Toshiba. It can capture 20MP images at 22fps, 1.8 times faster than that of Toshiba's T4K46 20MP image sensor, which has a pixel dimension of 1.2um, the company noted.

A reference module incorporating the product was due to be available from September 1.

Measuring 1 x 2.4in, the T4KA7 sensor has started sampling shipments.
