Local solar project developer SPCG Plc and Japan's Kyocera Corp. are ploughing $31 million into a solar panel manufacturing facility to be built in Nakhon Ratchasima province in Thailand, The Bangkok Post reported.

Scheduled for commercial operations in 2015, the facility is positioned to capture the rising demand for solar panels in the ASEAN region with an annual manufacturing capacity of 1MW.

In the report, SPCG CEO and Chairwoman Wandee Khunchornyakong identified Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam as potential key markets for renewable energy.

Aside from the facility project with Kyocera, SPCG recently inked an agreement with local distributor Home Product Centre Plc to carry the solar developer's 2.75kW, 3.75kW and 4.5kW solar panels at HomePro outlets across Thailand.

As stated in an internal survey mentioned by the daily, SPCG targets to make $15.5 million in solar panel revenues in the retail segment, and sell between 1,000 and 3,000 units in two years.

SPCG and Kyocera started working together in 2008, having built 36 solar farms across 10 provinces with 260MW of total capacity. It is that the solar farms have been running at full capacity since only the middle of the year when licences were acquired in 2009.

Kyocera is SPCG's joint-venture partner in Solar Power Roof Co., with Japan-based electronic component manufacturer holding a 90 per cent stake.
