Mentor Graphics Corp. unleashed what it boasts as the embedded industry's first technical implementation of a network functions virtualisation (NFV) solution on a 64bit ARM processor with AMD. The AMD Embedded R-series 64bit ARM-based multicore SoC, codenamed "Hierofalcon," comprise the NFV platform on the latest 64bit ARM architecture, according to the company.

AMD provides the underlying processor hardware for telecommunications and networking infrastructure solutions, and recognises the importance of an efficient NFV solution. Thus, AMD engaged Mentor Graphics for its Linux and tools expertise, and Aricent for their networking software solution, to build a platform for today's most demanding networking customers.

NFV is a network architecture concept based on virtualising classes of network node functions into building blocks. These blocks can be inter-connected to create communications services, but this process is complicated and requires long development cycles, must adhere to industry standards for quality and performance, and relies on expertise of hardware and software specialists.

In addition to the Mentor Embedded Linux technology, the Sourcery CodeBench suite of developer tools from Mentor Graphics can help embedded systems engineers gain valuable insights into system behaviour and timing through a visual debugging framework that identifies functional, timing and performance bottlenecks. This NFV platform solution enables networking and telecommunications OEMs to rapidly develop and deploy Linux-based applications with minimised risks, greater productivity and faster time-to-market, added Mentor Graphics.
