MEMS mic ensures audibility in loud environments

STMicroelectronics has released the MP23AB02B MEMS microphone that the company said offers ultra-low distortion at less than 10 per cent even at very high external sound-pressure levels. According to the company, the device allows smartphones and wearable devices to perform better when placing calls or recording audio in loud environments.

With acoustic overload level of 125dBSPL and signal-to-noise ratio of 64dBA, the 3.35 x 2.5 x 0.98mm microphone promises market-leading performance for its minuscule size. The key is ST's dedicated pre-amplifier design, which prevents saturation of the output signal even when background-noise levels are high, such as in concert venues, bars or clubs, or if the user is speaking loudly close to the microphone. In addition, omnidirectional sensitivity ensures excellent overall performance and versatility in mobile applications.


The MP23AB02B is also easy to design-in, stated the company. It operates from a single supply voltage in the 1.8-3.6V range and generates a single-ended output. Typical operating current of 150uA ensures ultra-low power consumption, which simplifies thermal management and helps maximise battery life. Specified over the extended operating-temperature range from -40°C to 85°C, the microphone also ensures outstanding ruggedness and reliability, added ST.

The MP23AB02B is in volume production in the RHLGA 3-lead metal-cap package, priced from $1 for orders of 1,000 pieces.
