Semtech Corp. revealed an RF development platform it co-developed with several Wi-SUN Alliance members, aimed at advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and industrial applications.

The development platform includes Semtech's SX1276 Wi-SUN compliant RF transceiver that features its long-range LoRa technology. It also integrates a Kinetis MCU from Freescale. Contributor member Nissin provided the Wi-SUN ready software stack.

"Thanks to its low-power characteristics, on-chip analogue and security integration, as well as scalability across a wide memory footprint, the Freescale Kinetis MCU architecture is particularly suited for AMI and currently used in many metering applications," said Emmanuel Sambuis, Director for IoT & Connectivity at Freescale Microcontrollers.

Semtech touts the platform as the first Wi-SUN ready solution. The company believes that the combination of RF transceiver, MCU and software stack will directly benefit engineers building Japan's metering infrastructure.

Wi-SUN technology is said to be an essential part of smart utility networks around the world. The smart grid promises a dramatic transformation of the world's electricity infrastructure, and its deployment has been taking place at a rapid pace for the electric utility industry.

"Wi-SUN brings standardisation and interoperability to a wide variety of smart utility and smart city network application areas," said Phil Beecher, chair of Wi-SUN Alliance. "These will play a significant role in the Internet of Things."
