Micro-circular connectors reduce electronics footprint

Omnetics unleashed its waterproof micro-circular connectors that offer significant size and weight reduction for digital and analogue applications. Having passed the IP-67 immersion testing, the micro-sized (0.05in pitch) connectors in compact metal or over-moulded polymer shells are said to provide remarkable size space savings for circuits requiring multiple pin interconnection systems.

Configurations available include solder cup, thru-hole and pre-wired systems. Multiple metal shell options provide the designer a variety of locking systems and can also be used to connect cable shielding to panel mounted connectors on the instrument chassis. Over-moulded polymer shells are also available and can be used to reduce overall diameter and weight.

Micro-circular connectors

Omnetics' connectors use nickel and gold plated beryllium plated flex-pins and are available as standard products ranging from five to 39 positions per shell. Current rating is set for up to 3A with a dielectric withstand voltage of 660V and insulation resistance of 5000M? at 500VDC. The micro-miniature connectors are designed to perform consistently up thru 20g level of vibration with no discontinuities greater than 1ms and pass 50g level of shock, according to the company. Metal shells and plating options include nickel, brass, stainless steel and black oxide finishes. Shielded cabling is banded to the metal shells giving excellent EMI protection.

The connectors come in standard and custom back-shells, as well as pre-moulded strain-reliefs to help users fit the size and shape of the cable attached. The designer can specify mixed signal formats to reduce even further size, shape and weight of the interconnection systems as a whole. The designer can also reduce the number of outer shells when combining two connectors using different pin types or sizes in an insulator. This significantly improves the miniaturisation of the equipment involved.

Circular connectors are designed for handling round cabling from high-speed digital, analogue and power systems. Designers are now being pushed to reduce both size and weight within their existing electronics to allow for rugged portability within the field.

Immersion sealed connectors and cable systems are needed in many applications. Mobile robotic equipment, hand-held electronics, and Future Soldier systems, among others, now require multiple circular connectors to route command signals and functions to different extremities within their instrumentation. Evolving unmanned aircraft design is demanding interconnect miniaturisation, as many recent UAV's are reducing size and weight in an effort to enable the units themselves to be launched by hand. To do so, the units must remain small and light enough for the launch itself to be conducted by a single person.
