A local electronics start-up has made the headlines in Vietnam, having developed an integrated smart solutions package based on capacitive sensing technology. The solutions are positioned to increase the Vietnamese companies' share in the country's smart home market dominated by foreign companies.

Established in April 2012, Lumi Vietnam's work focuses on from-the-ground-up development of smart home solution that replaces home switches with a capacitive touch switch at the very least, and allows the user to control a host of home electrical systems using a single remote or from a smartphone. It wants to sell the idea of a modern Vietnamese home, which features convenience, improved safety and ease of use.

Nguyen: Understanding the cost and technology requirements of Vietnamese homeowners is where Lumi differentiates itself.

In Vietnam, the available intelligent integrated solutions are advanced, but mostly focused on buildings, said Nguyen Duc Tai, director of Lumi Vietnam. Whereas interest for such technologies in residential housing is quickly picking up, investments remain sluggish because the available solutions have been marketed by foreign companieswhich originate from countries including U.S. and Korea, with famous brands such as Creston, Honeywell, Kocom and AV Techand, mostly, steep.

This is where Lumi differentiates itself, said Nguyen. The company have invested heavily in research, enabling it to understand the demands of the local homeownersin terms of technology requirement and cost.

Lumi introduces three different packages. The most basic replaces the traditional power switch with a modern touch switch. This particular type of technology does not use the connectors that mechanical switching devices do, boosting safety by eliminating the risk of electrical shock the result from touching the switch with wet hands, for example.

The second package offers the advantages of remote operation. It connects and integrates the electrical equipment in the room, enabling users to operate them via a remote control. Finally, the advanced smart home package In addition, the package is the most comprehensive of the three. It integrates all devices in the home through the interface installed on smartphones or tablets running iOS or Android.

Lumi uses Zigbee, to facilitate communication and interaction between devices. Known as a low-power wireless communication technology, Lumi devices consumes as low as 0.2W in idle mode. According to the company, its power consumption is negligible that it only consumes less than $0.02 per month.
