Avago unveils photovoltaic MOSFET driver

Avago has introduced a photovoltaic MOSFET driver qualified to AEC-Q100 Grade 1 test guidelines. The ACPL-K30T claims to be the first such device to be usable in "under-the-hood" high-temperature automotive applications.

The ability to meet the high-temperature and reliability requirements of automotive applications came about through refinement of the company's optical/LED technology, stated Mark Gray, field applications manager for Avago Technologies GmbH. The MOSFET is a key part of the company's overall strategy to press further into automotive applications.


Using its R2 coupler-based products, Avago has design wins in more than 50 car models in applications ranging from analogue sensing, oil pumps, chargers and converters to drive systems, air conditioner compressors, heaters, battery management systems (for electric vehicles), and CAN bus interfacing, noted the company.

The ACPL-K30T has an operating temperature range of -40°C to 125°C, can drive high-voltage MOSFETs with up to 1kV isolation at 2.2A, and can be used both for under-the-hood and battery management systems in modern electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.

Other features include an open-circuit voltage and a short-circuit current of 7V and 5mA, respectively (typical, at an LED drive current of 10mA), and a turn-on time of 40ms (typical).

The ACPL-K30T is priced starting at $1.87 in 1,000-piece quantities. Samples and production quantities are available.
