Wigel pointed to industrial systems, which are usually in place for decades, as an example of a sector that needs security immediately. Not implementing security measures in industries with long lifecycle equipment "could be a big, big miss," she added.

The platform includes new McAfee security for IoT gateways with an enhanced privacy identity (EPID) technology that Intel will promote to other silicon vendors. EPID has anonymity properties in addition to hardware-enforced integrity, according to the release. Moorhead called Intel's security policy "very mature."

Lightweight cryptography and anonymous device IDs will play a big role in EPID and IoT, said Wen-Hann Wang, head of Intel Labs. "These devices are so limited in capability, so we've come up with a creative way to protect them."

The new gateways will be offered by 20 ODMs in 2015. Intel will drive elements of the new platform into IoT standards efforts in which it is active, including the Open Interconnect Consortium and the Industrial Internet Consortium, which also count Qualcomm, Cisco, and MediaTek among their members.
