India's central government has ordered all ministries to prefer electronic products manufactured locally in government procurement, Live Mint reported.

Part of the statement released by the Prime Minister's Office stated: "[A]s part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Make in India initiative, the Union government has issued strict guidelines to all ministries to provide preference to domestically manufactured electronic products in government procurement."

Modi launched the "Make in India" campaign in September last year, hoping to attract foreign investors that will help make the country a global manufacturing hub. Currently, India imports 65 per cent of the current demand for electronic products mostly from China.

According to the directive, all government ministries and departments will have to identify department-specific electronic products, which are made domestically, for procurement. Then, they will need to notify them within two weeks.

The Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) has released a tender template for procurement of electronic items. All government departments shall follow the said template, according to the PMO's statement.

In addition, DeitY will provide an online monitoring system for reporting by ministries, government departments and even state governments on procurement of electronic products. Set to be operational within 15 days, the system will show by value the breakdown of locally manufactured electronic equipment.
