Wireless startup to unveil tech to boost spectral efficiency

During this year's CES, a startup is set to showcase a technology that offers the equivalent of QAM-16384 modulation, a 40 per cent increase in spectral efficiency over today's systems. The technology from MagnaCom promises wireless connections that use less scarce spectrum or deliver higher data rates using the same bands.

The higher modulation level would enable digital broadcast standards such as DVB-C2 and DVB-T2, which has been described but not implemented, said Yossi Cohen, the MagnaCom's CEO. "Systems deployed today are at the QAM-1024 level, and companies have announced plans for products at the 2,049 and 4,096 levels, but to my knowledge there are no other working implementations at QAM-4096. We are showing QAM-16384."

MagnaCom's demo aims to show how the company's technology has advanced since it debuted last year. At the previous CES, MagnaCom used its technology to demonstrate the equivalent of QAM-4096. This time it also plans private demos of capabilities related to OFDM modulation that it will describe publicly later.

The demo is based on FPGA boards the startup has delivered to at least two companies interested in testing its capabilities. MagnaCom aims to win its first licensees of the technology in the coming year or two, Cohen said.

Initial applications include wireless applications where systems vendors own both ends of the links, such as cellular microwave backhaul and satellite communications. In addition, the company has hired a specialist to propose its technology for use in next-generation cellular and WiFi standards.

MagnaCom has been awarded at least 38 US patents and has applied for more than 100 patents worldwide. It aims to be an intellectual property licensor to those wanting to build the chips, boards and systems using it.

The company, which now employs nearly 20 people, closed a second round of private financing this year. Cohen would not say how much funding it has taken in or who its investors are. However, he does not have immediate plans for additional financing.

This year, Artemis Networks debuted technology promising breakthroughs in cellular data rates, and Kandou Bus demonstrated an approach for significantly faster board-level interconnects.
