Spreadtrum Communications, a fabless semiconductor company that develops mobile chipset platforms for mobile devices supporting 2G, 3G and 4G wireless communications standards, announced that the Tizen operating system (OS) is successfully integrated with Spreadtrum's WCDMA chipsets. This integrated platform is now shipping in Samsung's first Tizen smartphone, the Z1, released in January 2015 to the Indian market.

The Z1 runs the Tizen 2.3 OS and integrates Spreadtrum's SC7727S mobile chipset platform, which features a 1.2Ghz dual-core WCDMA processor. The device, which retails for $92, also sports a 3.1Mpx camera, 4GB of on-board memory, and is bundled with a variety of content and service offers.

Dr. Leo Li, Spreadtrum's chairman and CEO commented, "We are very proud to partner with Samsung to add the Tizen operating system to our portfolio of supported OS, and to work together to promote the adoption of smartphones around the world. The close cooperation of both teams and deep integration of our products helps to reduce device power consumption and system memory consumption, which greatly improves the user experience for entry-level smartphones."
