Vishay Intertechnology Inc. has unveiled a 25W thick film power resistor in a compact surface-mount TO-252 style (DPAK) package. AEC-Q200-qualified, the Sfernice DTO25 targets automotive, industrial and military applications, and claims to saves space compared with previous-generation solutions while providing high power dissipation of at least 3W on the PCB and a wide range of resistance values.

The DTO25 is non-inductive and provides a resistance range from 0.016 to 700k. Offering a compact 8.2mm x 7.3mm footprint with a low 2.8mm profile, the thick film resistor can support more than 10 times more energy than competing components in the DPAK package, up to 5kW+ for a 10-5s pulse and 10J for a 0.1s pulse.

The device also promise to provide long-term reliability for power supply, load resistor, snubber, power conversion, and pre-charging and discharging in battery management systems for hybrid and electric cars, missile control boards and UPS. In these applications it allows designers to replace several chip resistors with one device to lower costs, simplify layouts, and reduce the size of their end products.

Thermal resistance for the DTO25 at 25W and 25C is 5C/W junction-to-case. The resistor features a standard temperature coefficient of 150ppm/C with standard tolerances of 1 per cent to 10 per cent. Connections for the resistor are tinned copper, and are specified for operation over a -55C to 150C temperature range. The device is RoHS-compliant, offers a moisture sensitivity level of one, and supports soldering temperatures at 270C for 10s.

Samples and production quantities of the DTO25 are available with lead times of eight to 10 weeks for larger orders.
