MediaTek is creating the CrossMount Alliance to bring partners and customers together and "explore new possibilities to drive the technology forward," the company said. "CrossMount will be open for developers to further expand the ability for innovative and new applications to be created, potentially changing the way we use and share devices and content," it added.

At a time when most leading chip vendors have withdrawn from the TV-chip business, MediaTek today is virtually alone in actively pursuing the smartphone, tablet and TV chips markets.

Jou, who joined MediaTek four years ago after a long career in the R&D group at Qualcomm, noted that it's not only gratifying but exciting to propose a new industry standard for cross-device sharing scheme involving all three major market segments.

MediaTek will make CrossMount available to customers and partners in Q3 for Android-based smartphone, tablet and TV products, said the company. MediaTek expects devices using the CrossMount technology to appear on the market by end of this year.

On a separate note, MediaTek, also launched a new strategic investment arm within the company, headquartered in Hsinchu, Taiwan. MediaTek Ventures will initially invest in start-ups in Greater China, Europe, Japan and North America, with a $300 million reserve.

MediaTek Ventures will actively invest into innovative start-ups in semiconductor-system-and devices, Internet infrastructure, services and Internet of Things (IoT), with the goal of creating a collaborative ecosystem around MediaTek's corporate objectives in communication, computing, online media and analytics. Investments will include all stages of funding with a disciplinary approach focused on value creation.
