Mentor Graphics Corp. looks into augmenting Tanner EDA's technologies with its own, after the former's recent announcement that it has acquired the business assets of the California-based electronic design company.

Mentor Graphics is already looking into boosting Tanner's technologies to come up with new products. Tanner's toolset is well-suited for designs using non-rectilinear geometries, such as MEMS and sensor devices, which are ideal for deployment into the Internet of Things (IoT) domain. Banking on these assets, Mentor Graphics therefore expects to increase its presence in the IoT market, said Robert Hum, Mentor Graphics vice president and general manager of the Design Verification and Test division.

Hum: The respective toolsets serve different markets, and we expect no redundancy.

According to Hum, "The respective toolsets [of the two companies] serve different markets, and we expect no redundancy. There are, however, areas of synergy that are apparent such as ModelSim and

. Our customers can expect deepened relationships between Tanner tools and those tools and wider cooperation as we find synergies across Mentor's IC design technology portfolio." In the process, Hum said that the company aims maintain Tanner's focus on offering "easy-to-learn, easy-to-use, highly integrated and productive tools for AMS IC designers."

Mentor Graphics also said that it will continue and support Tanner's existing products, which paves the way for an increased market presence of Tanner's AMS products, capitalising on the strength and reach of the Mentor Graphics global sales organisation.

"Tanner EDA has built an outstanding reputation as the price performance leader for the design, layout and verification of AMS ICs, MEMS and IoT devices," said Tanner President Greg Lebsack. "We are excited to join Mentor Graphics where we can leverage their extensive technology leadership and global footprint. We view this transaction as very positive for Tanner EDA's customers, employees and the industry as a whole."

Harvest Management Partners, LLC advised Tanner Research Inc. regarding the sale of the assets of Tanner EDA. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
