In the first of the three-part series, Handel H. Jones, founder and CEO of market research firm IBS, looks at what characterises the IoT market and in which application segments lies the growth.

The Internet of Things (IoT) can be a revolutionary enhancement for the data that is available to businesses and consumers. IoT can be viewed as the extension of the brains of businesses and people, which can broaden the user experience. IoT can also be a productivity tool as well as part of the content ecosystem. IoT device concepts are shown in figure 1.

Figure 1: IoT device concept. At one extreme, an IoT device can be a smartwatch or a virtual reality headset. At the other extreme is big data and artificial intelligence, such as IBM's Project Watson.

The real-world interfaces are sensors, and billions of sensors have already been deployed. IoT involves gaining value from the data that is collected from these sensors, where the data is processed and intelligently analysed.

At one extreme, an IoT device can be a smartwatch or a virtual reality headset. At the other extreme is big data and artificial intelligence, such as IBM's Project Watson. There are tens of thousands of IoT device opportunities among various extremes.
