This year's Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain, that took place from March 2-5 has been graced by the presence of more than 90,000 attendees from 200 countries. As many as 2,000 companies participated in the conference and demonstrated their latest products and innovations in various product lines.

MWC 2015 Key Themes:

5G advances test equipment for wireless tech
5G was the talk of the town at last year's Mobile World Congress. This year, however, the technology has become more prominent with its nascent application in the Internet of Things (IoT) and streaming video use cases.

This briefing provides comprehensive and valuable insights of these developments and other topics, based on feedback received from conference sessions, analyst briefings and post-show interviews held with key players in the mobile value chain. This will also benefit network equipment vendors, application developers, system integrators, telecom operators, cloud providers and handset manufacturers.

  • 1) Software defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualisation (NFV) gaining traction
  • Small cells playing a larger role
  • 2) 5G hype cycle begins, ahead of standardisation in 2016-17 and commercialisation by 2020; Europe making a push to recapture technological mindshare with 5G, after being eclipsed by the U.S., Japan and Korea for 4G
  • 3) LTE unlicensed (LTE-u), with operators showing interest in using unlicensed spectrum and vendors poised to get incremental small cell deals
  • 4) 'Virtual everything' - AT&T targeting 5 per cent of its telco network functions virtualised by CY15; vendors showcased solutions including even radio access network (RAN) virtualisation
  • 5) Emerging technologies: signalling orchestration (much more than just diameter routing, the interworking with legacy and other emerging protocols will play a huge role) and self-organising networks (SONs)
  • 6) Endpoint launches galore: MWC would not be complete without the introduction of various products ranging from smartphones to the emerging wearables segment
