Due to a court-issued injunction prohibiting Synopsys Inc. from selling emulators or software that incorporate Mentor Graphics Corp.'s patented emulation technology, the company announced that it will now sell infringement-free versions of its high-performance ZeBu server emulation systems worldwide.

Synopsys claimed that the recent ZeBu release does not include the two features previously found to infringe on a Mentor-owned patent, as the injunction issued by the Oregon Federal District Court prohibits them from marketing within the United States any product that utilises Mentor's technology. Synopsys is also prohibited from importing emulators with Mentor Graphics' patented technology into the United States and from selling emulators outside the U.S. for use within the country.

Synopsys' next move, therefore, was to release infringement-free versions of the ZeBu server software. This release includes up to three times faster compile performance and Unified Debug with the Verdi solution.

"We have made substantial investments in ZeBu technology and software over the last two years and currently deliver the industry's fastest and most scalable emulation platform," said Manoj Gandhi, general manager and senior vice president of the verification group at Synopsys.

Meanwhile, the Oregon court confirmed more than $36 million to be granted to Mentor for lost profits resulting from Synopsys' infringement.
