Industrial IoT steps into spotlight

Keywords:Internet of Things? IIoT? industrial equipment? M2M?

The long wait for Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) has ended when the arrival of the first wave of mass customisation. The technology that enabled mobile devices or home appliances to 'talk' to one another has gone large-scale to accommodate industrial equipment and production-size machines.

Now, buildings only light rooms when people are present. The farm soil will tell you when it needs water, in fact, it will water itself. The IIoT is full of possibilities, and the deployment is now, not in some highly developed future.

Factories can change from one product to another with the simple tap of a touchscreen. If one piece of equipment on the line breaks down, the rest of the line is alerted. Jet engines will tell you when they need maintenance. Highway will alert you when they need snow removal.

Machine-to-machine connectivity

M2M connectivity

M2M connectivity can offer a range of benefits, from alerting a machine down the line that one of the machines has failed, or to switch products on a production line without lengthy set-up. (Source:

Unplanned repairs caused 60,000 air travel delays each year in the U.S. Online software can predict maintenance needs before things break, and maintenance can be scheduled instead of interruptive. (Source:
