Rohde & Schwarz has unveiled the R&S FSWP phase noise tester that allows users to measure the spectral purity of signal sources such as generators, synthesisers and voltage-controlled oscillators (VCO) much faster than with any other solution. According to the company, the high-end instrument covers a frequency range up to 50GHz and offers a top dynamic range.

The extremely low phase noise of its local oscillator coupled with cross-correlation even makes it possible to easily measure signal sources that in the past required complex test setups or could not be measured at all, added Rohde & Schwarz.

Thanks to its fully digital signal processing, the R&S FSWP performs complex measurements at the push of a button and features intuitive touchscreen operation. It can quickly and easily measure the phase noise of pulsed sources as well as residual phase noise under pulsed conditions. The R&S FSWP is geared for both aerospace and defense and automotive applications, e.g. for manufacturers of radar components and synthesisers. The additional voltage sources also enable the R&S FSWP to measure VCOs in research and development and, while its high measurement speed allows it to be used in production.

The R&S FSWP can be upgraded to a signal and spectrum analyser. The R&S FSWP8 and R&S FSWP26 models for the 8GHz and 26GHz frequency ranges will be available from Rohde & Schwarz in late summer 2015; the R&S FSWP50 model for up to 50GHz in fall 2015.
