A look inside the TomTom GPS Watch

As wearable devices make a more proactive role in our life, industry developers are noticing many different applications for these products. At the Taipei International Computer Show (Computex 2015), ARM and iFixit looked inside the TomTom GPS Watch to know its components and add insight into the current sports watch design trends.

Worn like a watch, TomTom has a thickness of about 11.5mm, which makes it a suitable companion for any sportswear. It features an optional heart rate zone for tracking and recording the user's heartbeat. It is also waterproof for up to 50m deep.

The device has a built-in 3-axis MEMS accelerometer, 3-axis compass and vibration motor. Equipped with customised charging USB port, it uses a 3.7V, 190mA lithium battery. The device can last up to 10 hours when GPS is on and up to three months in standby mode. It can be used indoors or outdoors, providing users with real-time date such as distance, number of steps, calorie consumption and many more.

By supporting Bluetooth Smart, TomTom allows users to synchronise information with other devices. In addition to providing Bluetooth connectivity, it uses the CSR SiRF starV 5e GNSS receiver. And with QuickGPSfix Infineon GA725L6 GPS / GLONASS LNA, it can be used to implement dual satellite positioning.

Its display is a 1.3in coloured screen with 168x144 resolution. Located at the right side of the touch display is the switch for the backlight, while a small keyboard for selecting myriad functions is set below the display.

TomTom is built with crystal clock, IFA antenna, Texas Instruments CC2541 2.4GHz Bluetooth low energy SoC and ARM-based Cortex-M4 Atmel 32bit microcontrollerATSAM4S8C. This wearable device provides up to 2MB Flash and 16KB SRAM storage density, as well as a range of peripheral devices combined to achieve connectivity, system control and analogue interface functions.

In addition, other elements include TI TPS61222 DC-DC converter, TPS62243 300mA buck regulator with MSP430F5510 16bit mixed-signal MCU, Micron N25Q032A13ESC40F 4MB sequence memory, Atmel Atiny20 8bit MCU, Freescale dual-chip package MMA8452Q 3-axis MEMS accelerometer, and STMicroelectronics Battery Charger (STNS01).

Currently, the TomTom GPS Watch costs $146.
