Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has revealed a refresh of its Kaveri desktop processors aimed at mainstream workloads, online gaming and Windows 10. According to the company, the A8-7670K has four CPU cores running at up to 3.9GHz and six 757MHz GPU cores with AMD's graphics core next architecture, which can render games at up to 50fps. The chip operates at 95W and has 4MB of flash.

The chip is available and follows announcements about AMD's next-generation x86 processor for laptops, Carrizo. Despite slumping PC sales across the industry, AMD officials are hopeful about the success of a refresh targeting this market, banking in part on Windows 10 to strike a chord with eager customers.

"A new OS typically drives a lot of upgrades, even OEMs have been voicing this," an AMD spokesman said. "Usually I would say these things take a quarter to come through, but with Windows 10 I think we'll see things move a lot faster."

"The days when a new OS drove a PC refresh cycle alone are kind of gone," said Craig Stice, senior principal analyst for computers, servers and storage at IHS.
