Keywords:IC Insights? CMOS? image sensor? Yole Developpement?

IC Insights has come up with a ranking of CMOS image sensor vendors based on 2014 sales that differs significantly from a similar ranking released by Yole Developpement. IC Insights gave its ranking in a press release issued earlier this month while Yole's ranking appeared in April 2015.

Both agree on the top three vendors, although they have them in a different order. What is more remarkable is that Yole includes Canon and OnSemi at positions four and five in its ranking; two companies that IC Insights does not include at all. Similarly IC Insights has Sharp and SK Hynix ranked at positions four and five while Yole does not include either of these companies in its top ten.

The ranking according to Yole goes: 1) Sony 27 per cent, 2) Samsung 19 per cent, 3) Omnivision 17 per cent, 4) Canon seven per cent, 5) On Semi (Aptina) six per cent, 6) Toshiba four per cent, 7) STMicro four per cent, 8) Nikon three per cent, 9) GalaxyCore three per cent, and 10) SiliconFile two per cent, PixelPlus two per cent, Pixart two per cent (others four per cent).

The ranking according to IC Insights goes: 1) Sony 32 per cent, 2) OmniVision 16 per cent, 3) Samsung 14 per cent, 4) Sharp eight per cent, 5) SK Hynix six per cent, and 6) GalaxyCore four per cent.
