Nordic Semiconductor has announced that ilumi Solutions has selected the nRF51822 system-on-chip (SoC) for its A19 and BR30 LED Smartbulbs. The second generation of Smartbulbs employ Nordic's technology to provide Bluetooth Smart connectivity to both iOS and Android-compatible Bluetooth Smart Ready devices.

ilumi is an established smart lighting and Internet of Things (IoT) industry player. The company's latest release, using the Nordic nRF51822 SoC, launched recently on crowdfunding website Kickstarte and surpassed its funding goal in just 24 hours.

The A19 is an 850+ lumen light (60W) that replaces standard form factor light bulbs, while the BR30 is an overhead or floodlight replacement producing 1150+ lumens (85W). Both Smartbulbs are equipped with Hyperlux LED technology providing over a million colours from any shade of bright and quality white light to vibrant saturated colours. Using up to 85 per cent less energy than a standard incandescent light bulb, the Smartbulbs last up to 20 years of life.

The Smartbulbs can be wirelessly networked with up to 50 other Smartbulbs via ilumi's robust Bluetooth Smart-based mesh. Unlike a standard broadcast mesh, the mesh offers both broadcast and direct connection capability, along with 15dBm power output, providing more than 50m of bulb-to-bulb over-the-air range.

In addition to app control and colour tunability, the new ilumi Smartbulbs' functionality helps to guide a user towards better lighting. For example, throughout setup and use, ilumi provides suggested light settings for a particular room or space. Users can also set schedules and different lighting experiences based on their preferences and time of day. For example, "sunrise" helps users wake in the morning, while torch mode turns on lighting as a person enters a room, and off again when he/she leaves. Other modes implement "circadian" or wellness lighting to help promote the body's natural rhythm.

Nordic's nRF51822 is a flexible multi-protocol SoC ideally designed for Bluetooth Smart and 2.4GHz ultra low-power wireless applications. The nRF51822 is built around a 32bit ARM Cortex M0 CPU with 256kB/128kB flash and 32kB/16kB RAM. The embedded 2.4GHz transceiver is fully compliant with Bluetooth v4.2, the latest Bluetooth Smart specification. The SoC's 2.4GHz radio offers 93dBm sensitivity in Bluetooth Smart mode.
