UK firm SocioEco plans to produce smartphones worth $1 in Vietnam and is looking for partners to help implement the project, according to the Authority of Radio Frequency Management (ARFM) under the Ministry of Information and Communication.

In a report by Vietnam Net, SocialEco CEO Theo Cosmora said that a $1 smartphone would provide low-income earners with access to information as well as help them benefit from social utilities and services on the ecosystem.

To cover the production cost, these low-cost smartphones will come with preinstalled advertising apps that will promote certain products and services.

Such projects are appropriate and should be promoted in a developing country like Vietnam, said Le Van Tuan, deputy head of the ARFM. However, he also noted that advertisement and supporting services should fit and benefit the user.

Cosmora said the inputs of the ARFM regarding the project will help SocialEco in its search for partners and in its implementation.

Recently, PC World published an article stating that Vietnam is poised to become the Silicon Valley of Southeast Asia.

The national government has pinned its hope to the technology sector, deeming it as the country's cornerstone of economic growth. Apart from investing heavily in infrastructure, Vietnam has also passed several economic policies to entice both domestic and international entrepreneurs to do business in the country.
