SingPost, in collaboration with IDA Labs, developed an unmanned aerial vehicle, more commonly known as drone, to deliver mail and packages. The company recently completed a test flight for end-to-end secure delivery in Singapore.

SingPost is an e-commerce logistics provider with 22 logistics centres across 15 countries, while IDA Labs is an organisation that develops smart city technology.

The test flight took five minutes to cover a 2km distance and carry a payload of a letter as well as a T-shirt in a packet. The drone is equipped a prototype app designed with security features and authentication functions to ensure that mail and packages are delivered to the intended recipients. The app also allows users to select their preferred delivery date and time to suit their schedules.

The drone, which is designed for use in dense urban landscapes, can carry a payload of up to half a kilogramme, fly at a height of up to 45m and travel a distance of 2.3km. It is battery-operated, reducing carbon footprint and making it energy-efficient.

SingPost successfully completed a test flight for its drone that carried a letter and a T-shirt.

"The use of the drone would significantly reduce delivery times," said Dr Bernard Leong, head of Digital Services at SingPost.

"SingPost is tapping on innovative technologies to accelerate its growth as an e-commerce logistics solutions provider in the region," he added.

Leong also said that the technology would allow the company to redeploy workers to other duties, which will improve "operational efficiencies and customer experience."

The logistics provider claims to be the first postal service company to embark on such a trial, but it does not have a specific timeline yet for when these drones will be used officially.
