Say goodbye to 'old-fashioned' ghost hunting

Who ever said that Halloween is just for kids? However, unlike the old days where we need to light up our torches and sharpen our pitchforks to hunt for the paranormal, we now have the technology to help us 'survive.'

Trulia, the online real estate site, has provided us with the perfect inspiration. Its number-crunching ghouls have used their traditional big data-driven maps to provide the top 10 cities where you are most likely to be bitten by a vampire or see a ghost. They also name the very worst place to be in a zombie attack. But don't worry, because, if you find your town on any of these lists, we've got the finest in mobile apps, devices, and technology to help you survive your encounters with the paranormal.

Let's start with everyone's favourite blood sucker, the vampire. Why? Mostly because Trulia tells us that three major tech towns are on the vampire's list of favourite hunting grounds. Among other data, Trulia has checked for the largest number of blood banks and hospitals per capita. Coming in at No. 2 on this list is Austin. No. 3 is San Francisco and Boston is No. 7.

But have no fear, because you have the best anti-vampire tool money can buy, your smartphone.

This is what anti-vampire kits looked like in the 19th century:

This app lights up your phone with "sunlight" to scare away vampires. In case that isn't enough, it can also provide this handy picture of a cross. I'm less sold on the idea that it gives you "smell free" pictures of garlic. Also, the free "Holy Water dispenser" would be more comforting if my phone had a squirt function (Apple, I'm looking at you). But between the cross and the searing light from my display, I'm sure that Vlad the Impaler will soon become Vlad the Hightailer, as in hightailing it back to Transylvania.
