Databeans, a market researcher, predicted earlier this year that the automotive semiconductor market will continue to gain share growing at a CAGR of 8% over the next 5 years. Following a 9% increase in worldwide revenue in 2014, this market is expected to reach a high of $28.5 billion this year.

The firm noted that this growth significantly outpaces the growth predicted for worldwide vehicle production, meaning that the pace at which electronics is being used in vehicles is accelerating. To illustrate this point the firm gave the example of the cost of electronics in a typical vehicle: 10 years ago the average cost of the electronics in a car was less than 20% of the total production cost, whereas it is now about 40% for traditional internal combustion engine cars and up to 70% for high-end electric vehicles.

One of the driving forces is telematics. Several features in this area that have become commonplace are semiautonomous driving aids, such as automatic parallel parking and lane-keeping assistance, and sensor-based reporting on car maintenance and usage. Databeans estimated that growth in such features, expanding regulatory requirements for safety and fuel economy as well as connected-car concepts like vehicle-to-vehicle communications will drive up the market for semiconductors to over $40 billion by 2020.

The smarter, connected cars will be evermore hungry for memory and storage to support a wide array of applications, including those that require near-instant boot up times at the start of an engine.

So here's a checklist of recent memory product introductions suitable for automotive use. Let the slide show begin!
